new video: Pentástick, from Stick Figures, on the Railboard
Hi everyone,
Was up late last night working my way through this one. It's not a perfect take, but does the job. I hope you like it. The Railboard is a fast and smooth surface and I like the tone for this piece, which is very, very busy, and it's easy for the parts to get lost in the fray.
I did my best to play the solo as it is on the CD, but there might be some differences.
Enjoy:

If there's interest, I'll be glad to put together a little StaffTab chart that shows the basic melody phrase and left-hand part, which can be played on any of the popular 10 and 12-string tunings.

Greg, Wow the hits just keep on coming! It's so nice to see you play these once again. Summed up, short and sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! I remember talking to you long time ago about this tune and I said "I really like Pent-A-Stick!" you replied politely and smiled, "No... it's Pen-TASS- Stick ,like Fantastic!" hence the accent over the "a"! great moving lines with double stops in both hands, the bass moving from a drone chord to what I call your"Charmed Life" chord or Root -Fifth -3rd on top- perfect example of the symmetry on both sides utilized in a very creative and listenable fashion. Revisted in "Tim was Here" on Ether Ore. Both great songs in their own right. Either way you say it ( Ta-ma-to, Ta-mah-to) it comes up Fantastic! You even got the Norwegian Wood tip of the hat at .032. Astro Meets Daisy next? thanks for the post, Dave Brosky

I like when we hear a 5/4 and it doesn't give that impression when we listen to it, when people don't make an association with Take Five for example. It's a question of accent. Great job.

Re: new video: Pentástick, from Stick Figures, on the Railbo
I think I remember reading this was a tune that NPR would play between segments with some regularity. I can't say I remember specifically hearing it in that context but I probably have. Regardless, it strikes me as the perfect "NPR between segments" tune/riff/musical snippet. Somehow I always think of that when I hear it....and I like it all the better. It just has a positive, hopeful energy to me.
Great song that looks fun to play. A StafTab would be great as I'd very much like to work on it.
Thanks to Dave for the pronunciation story....ohhhHHHHHH. Right. I get it now ! LOL
Great song, great railboard sound, great fun in your playing Greg !
Thanks,
Don

Re: new video: Pentástick, from Stick Figures, on the Railbo
Thanks for all the kind comments everyone. And Dave, special thanks to you for the pronunciation guide. I posted a chart that can be played on all the main Stick tunings, Bari Melody, Classic, Matched Reciprocal, no problem. Here's the link: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=7389Dave, I think the next tune from Stick Figures will probably be "Ojos Verdes". That tune actually grew out of an exercise in Free Hands, which I'll elaborate on later. And Kataway, I am totally down with what you are saying. Accent, and swing. One of my favorite 5/4s is the "Mission Impossible" theme. I was aghast when they remade the film and changed the theme to 4/4. No respect for brilliance.

I sometimes think that I am still a musician despite all the theory I have forgotten and all the hours I have spent doing something other than playing: then I read something like this and realize that I have not been a musician in years (and that is okay).
