jpw542 wrote: I'm a bass player who wants to learn to play stick. I've been doing a lot of research, including this site, and have decided to ask for some opinions on what instrument I should be looking for. I want to use the stick in a latin/flamenco duo/trio, a progressive rock/improv trio, and as a solo instrument. Pretty minimal on the processing end. So far, these are my thoughts:
10-string. Stickup. Baritone Melody? Medium Guage strings?
So far as I can tell, the choice of wood does not change the tone greatly, therefore I wanted to pick something with good visibility, especially in lower light settings. I was thinking Rosewood or Paduak with light colored inlays or lines. Any recommendations?
Does anyone have an opinion on older ironwood instruments and how they compare to the newer models? I'm really trying to stay under $1500 if I can. But I want to like my instrument enough to keep it. So I'd be willing to go to $2500 if I have to. How about buying refurbished from Stick Enterprises? Anyone had experience with that?
Sorry for the long post, but I'd really like to clear some things up before I take the next step. Any and all opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jon Hi Jon, I've seen lots of older Sticks that played great, and some that we not well-cared-for. but never one that was in such bad shape that Emmett couldn't resurrect it. The biggest problem to watch out for is people putting string on them that are too heavy (pre-adjustable truss models) The refurbished instruments from SE play like new. If you get and older instrument from another, I suggest you send it back to SE if it hasn't been there in a while for a once-over. Emmett's does a lot to keep older instruments in circulation. And, as others have mentioned, they hold their value really well, so even if you decide to buy a new one, you can order one, buy a used one in the meantime, and then sell it when yours is ready, without much risk of losing money in the process. The basic technique for 10 and 12 is the same. Since there's less to look at, it might be easier to learn the method on an instrument with fewer strings. anyway, you can make tons of music with a 10-string. rosewood, glow-in-the-dark inlays, light gauge Baritone Melody Happy Hunting.

I am in the process of listing my 10 string rosewood stick, so if the other one you are looking at doesn't work out, you may want to consider it. It is a modern stick, with rails and PASV-4 passive Villex quad pickup, as well as the Roland GK-3 MIDI pickup. Everything is in excellent shape. The firm price I'm listing it at is $2,550. I should have it posted with pictures on the forum this morning.
Mike Well Everyone, thanks for your input. Mike (SenseDoor) and I seem to have worked out an agreement for his rosewood 10 string (PASV-4 pickups, Roland GK-3 MIDI pickup, medium guage strings, matched reciprocal tuning). So, I should officially join the club within a couple weeks. Thanks again! ---Jon

Nice purchase, it should sound great! I probly would have been happy enough getting a PASV-4 for my Rosewood, but I got a tad (ok, a lot!) greedy and ordered a new graphite instead, hehehehe.
