![Post Post](./styles/serenitydarkblue/imageset/icon_topic_latest.gif) Alto Stick light string gauges
Yesterday the first string on my Alto Stick broke and I just ran out of spares (still have three packs, all missing the first string). Guess I shouldn't try bending it so much. (I checked that there's nothing wrong with the instrument.) Last time that string broke right before a gig.
Now I'd like to get some additional spares (regular guitar strings) because I don't like taking individual strings from the string sets from SE. I'd rather change them all at once in regular intervals. Does anyone happen to know what the string gauge for the first string (i.e. highest melody string) on the light gauge string pack for the Alto Stick is?

I keep a micrometer in my kit and use it for all kinds of things - among them figuring out the size of "mystery strings". You can get a Chinese one with way good enough resolution for anything like that on ebay for $15-$25.

Sitting here looking at my pack of light alto strings , I have noted in the past its really hard ( i.e. impossible I think ) to find out the gauges of the Stick sets. Maybe thats the plan. Captain has a perfect fix though in a cheap micrometer, never thought of that. Thanks.

Well, I just ordered a couple of D'Addario 009 guitar strings. That's got to be sufficient for now. I hope the string won't stand out too much.

Someone once wrote on this forum that the Alto Standard Tuning starts from 0.065. At this moment I tune my Alto 3 semitones below Standard Tuning (e,h, f#, c#, g# - A, E, H, F#, C#) and start from 0.08. You have higher string tuned a quart above.

I believe the best choice for this, assuming it's a high A in your tuning, is a .065 stainless steel string.

I needed strings but SE wasn't answering my emails. So, I ended up buying 4 sets of NewTones from the UK. I've never played with the proper Stick strings, but I really love my NewTones. https://www.newtonestrings.com/history/They were 14.99 a set at the time, plus 7.99 for shipping. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/chapman-stick-strings-sets-c40/newtone-strings-m29

I changed my order to the thinnest string they had (.008). Hope it isn't going to break immediately. Just needs to last long enough until I can get a proper replacement. It's gig season after all ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif) Thanks for the comments, everyone!
