Do the light gauge strings go out-of-tune more frequently than heavier gauges? That's been my experience, which is why I started to use heavy gauge. I then backed off to medium, which made tapping easier.

I would say it's less likely that they "go out of tune" and more likely that it's easy to bend or push the strings out of tune. You can avoid this by playing right behind the fret and using hand motion along the line of the string as your technique foundation, rather than only using a "typing" motion.

My (2nd hand) Stick came with light gauge strings.

At first I really struggled with tuning - I blamed the strings and thought I'd need to switch to a heavier gauge.

However, I eventually realised that I was using too much force when tapping, probably because I've been tapping on my 6-string bass for the last 20 years, combined with having the volume a little too low.

Volume up and a lighter touch (which makes it really easy to do slides!) and I now love the light strings and my tuning is much improved.

Cheers,
Nick
