Post subject:  New stick player from South Bay

Hi all,

Just received my first stick I bought on reverb Friday before last, an instrument I’ve been wanting to get my hands on since I was 16 (32 now). Been intrigued by it after seeing Bob Culbertson perform in either the summer of 2009 or 2010 at a Bay Area art and wine festival.

Currently I work as a classical guitar teacher, and freelance audio engineer/sound designer/composer in the South Bay. So far, I’ve been loving my journey with the stick, I’ve been carrying it around with me to practice between lessons, and a few of my students think it’s the coolest thing they’ve seen, the rest think it’s scary/intimidating. I finished scoring a local film back in November that premiered in January, and the lead actress/writer of the film wants me to score another project which I’m determined to write and perform on the stick.

So far I’ve been going through Stick Book and Stickology for exercises to get my right hand up to speed with my left. Also transcribing some repertoire for the instrument. I’m starting with the Bach Cello suite in G prelude, and thought the opening to Philip Glass’ “Glassworks” would be a good study for some polyrhythmic independence for the hands.

In addition to the introduction, I’m curious if there are resources that go in depth with scale positions for the left hand? I’m finding it difficult to move along in the 5ths tuning on the bass side of the instrument.

Thanks! Looking forward to talking to y’all!

Hey there and welcome.

The left hand has the most room for exploration - is it a bass? A guitar? It's a Stick and unlearning, or letting loose, of what you may be used to on those instruments may help.

Lots of friendly advice here, we're always good for a few links or opinions =)

I am based down in Murrieta if ever you are around and want to talk Stick - cheers. Gene

Sup dude and welcome to the cool kids club haha

I came from classical guitar and bass so I can kind of relate from your experience; been playing for 5 years personally(35y/o). Id recommend you 100% approach the instrument like a total beginner since the muscle memory is really alien. You're at an advantage too because you probably know straight 4ths backwards and forwards and realized by now that inverted 5ths are basically just simulated straight fourths. You've gotta pyramid up like any instrument; start with ideas for exercises, etudes, and transpose the easiest song you know.

Id also recommend not to waste your time with 10-string classic tuning and jump straight into baritone melody or matched reciprocal. Those tuning suit the instrument better, allow you to level up to 12-string easier, and 99% of songs can be transcribed to it without any aerobic techniques (switching from crossed to uncrossed midsong, etc.).

I attempted Glassworks - Opening some years ago myself but found the polyrhythm stuff way over my head at the time haha Give it a shot tho, best of luck to ya

Congrats and welcome! All the best on your exploration. Your Stick looks much like my original Stick (10-string Maple #1283), which I sold 4 years ago. Great instrument.

Keep us informed of your journeys.

Others have said what I would about the playing aspects.

Thanks for the pic. Do my eyes deceive me or is that an SG12 'Stick Guitar' (i.e. the guitar scale length version)?

Serial numbers are always of interest too. :)

I should also add (from personal experience), if your instrument is an older model with a 34" scale length you may need to upgrade the bridge saddles to adapt to SE's modern string gauges. If you don't the actions gonna be jacked up; the sent them to me for free when I called and asked.
