Post subject:  silent foot controller? - for ipad effects plugin host AUM

hi i am think about using AUM in an ipad to host a few effect plugins and a looper ( quantiloop is what i'm thinking ) .

it's important for me to have a midi foot controller that is silent switch wise. there is physical reverb environment where i want to record that's very sensitive/subtle and i don't want footswitch clicks to be a problem. so does anyone have a suggestion?

4 switches is probably enough that can be programmed as momentary (not latching). possiblilities might be the irig blueboard or the airturn quad500.

i realize the blueboard does not look super durable, but that would be ok for me as it's not going to get a lot of wear and tear and i'm willing to buy a new one if/when it wears out any one if anyone has

I use the original Keith McMillan SoftStep. The second version appears to be back ordered at Sweetwater but they have a demo model available - https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... controller

It is completely silent and the pads can be used as switches or continuous controllers. You can also plug in an external volume pedal with an adapter. There are two potential downsides:

1. No Bluetooth. You would have to buy their adapter box although you can use a Bluetooth adapter plugged into their adapter.

2. Programming is not super intuitive but doable. I programmed it years ago for my needs - maybe the interface has improved.

The first generation is on Reverb for a lot less and it comes with the expander box. One bug in the first generation version is an electrical hum caused by having the pads light up. I just turned off the feature and it works just fine.

For me the SoftStep is just a bit problematic if you're looping. The switches are soft (hence the name ;) ) so if you're doing loops where the timing is real critical, it can be hard to get them just right. If you find yourself on carpeting, it can exacerbate the problem.

I hear you though. I use a Rocktron All Access (now it's called the Midi Raider) and while I still think it's one of the best controllers ever made, the switches are loud and it bothers me in quieter rooms.

I'm considering trying out the Nektar Pacer. It looks like it will give me the timing I want with quiet switches. Plus its USB powered (as is the SoftStep).
