non-midi Pads for melody side
Ok I would appreciate some gear advice here. I tend to play 4 ways on my melody side.
1. Clean bright, a touch of verb. Ballads etc 2. Clean highs cut, a touch of verb Jazz 3 Clean with a midi line for distortion/gr300 effects Prog/jazz, Rock 4 clean with a pad sound anything
it's the fourth one that I want to improve upon. I hate the midi tracking for pad sounds. And I hate the pad sounds on the gr 550. For distortion The tracking is fine.
So is there something non midi that I can use to get lush pad sounds to fill up sonic space AND still have my articulation?
All recommendations are appreciated
Brett

Re: non-midi Pads for melody side
Hmmmm ...
Historically when I've used MIDI Stick for pads it has been in the context of making loops. So I will set the attack on the pads to be slow and then tap just ahead of where I need it. I'm never going for clean Stick sound and pad at the same time so in that regard, real exact tracking is not that important.
You might try playing with some heavy reverbs. Try using like a hall reverb and setting the reverb time to the maximum but keep the FX level down. That way your initial notes are still predominantly clean but then you hear that long reverb kind of creep in in the background. It's not really a pad but it does kind of give you a spacy but subtle wash.

Re: non-midi Pads for melody side
I do this kind of thing all the time with guitar and Stick. Here's what you want; Stick >>> Compressor >>> Chorus or Detune or Both>>> Multitap Delay >>> GOOD Reverb -Compressor flattens the volume out and adds sustain -Chorus/Detune adds depth and width -Multitap Delay (more taps the better set to high feedback setting) fills in the spaces -Reverb (set to large space, long decay time, and mixed to more reverb than dry signal) makes it a pad Watch at 2:20 in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3aqZSywx7k&feature=plcp&context=C39caba1UDOEgsToPDskKAj6QwA79gtPftU7-WivSPHe does it a little differently than described above, but it's the same general principle. I've found you can get the edge off of the attack with the reverb mix instead of a volume pedal if you like. Works great and is nice on the Stick when blended into some of your dry melody side (like a wash over your right hand notes). Karma

Re: non-midi Pads for melody side
Hi Brett, If you have dual signal paths, like using a post-fader send on a mixer, you can treat a signal and have the clean signal also present. I did this using the StepAbout on Ether Ore on the first track, where the melody and bass sides both have a clean signal path, but the melody side also has a pad effect that fades in while the clean signal decays: http://greghoward.bandcamp.com/track/the-first-daySlow gear, eq, chorus, lots of delay, and a long reverb.

Oh yeah! Boss Slow Gear or Guyatone SV-2 or Behringer Slow Motion (or other) is a great addition to this type of sound. Karma

Re: non-midi Pads for melody side
You can obtain great results with simply a StepABout and a high end delay. I purchased some monthes ago that device, and it ended every GAS crisis for delays (and sould I mention that I LOVE DELAYS). Check out the related videos to listen to the various sounds and textures you can have under your foot (and with some tweaking) with that little box : Maybe I should try to put online a demo with some sounds.

Hey Brett.
I'm consistently wowed by the natural and musical effects of my Eventide Space.
This video is a good contextualizer though perhaps the sound isn't as good as it could be, always use headphones, yes?
Have fun.

Hey Radkon, Not to hijack Brett's thread, but I've been in the market for a new high-end reverb. My old standby has been the TC Nova Reverb, but it's due to be retired. I've always dug Eventide effects, and I was intrigued when they announced the Space Factor. How are the reverbs working out for you? Is it worth the dough? I'm not really concerned with all the other stuff it does, I just want a very nice dedicated reverb.
