Post Stompboxs and FX!
Hi guys!

I'm finding myself in a jazz fusion/prog rock band setting with the stick and am looking for stomp boxes and or effect for my Stick. I'm keeping the bass side clean but am on the look out for a good distortion, Chorus and compressor. I'm trying to go as cheap as possible, around the $100 area if possible. Right now I use a Yamaha magic stomp with a Morley optical volume pedal, but using the stomp for all these effects is driving me crazy. I would also love to get that flange sound Emmett gets on "Parallel Galaxies", as well but have no idea how to achieve it!

any suggestions?

Thanks!

While we are on the subject, I was looking at the picture of Emmett's pedal board on the sleeve of his album but its hard to make out. What stomp boxes is he using? Do you guys know?

A sure value on the second hand market is the pretty old Yamaha DG Stomp. You should find one used for 150 us$ I think.

Emmett rig seems not very hard to reproduce, but there's a key element in his rig, the Patch of Shade, that is hard to buy (extremely rare, I had the chance to play sme on the past, and it's a very unique device). But, back to the discussion, I can see on the Parallel Galaxy pic : Ibanez serie 9 flanger - Ibanez EQ - Boss Heavy Metal distortion - Ibanez chorus - Big Jam phaser - Boss digital delay . I can see a MXR box, but have any idea of what it is.
Sounds a bit obvious, but main part of his sound is his incredible technique, more than the effects he used. He has a strong sonic signature, quickly recognizible, even these days (I think he doesnt use any stompboxes now)

Your dead on! I spoke with Emmett about his lack of effects last August and he made it very clear he was done with them. I know the Patches of Shade is out of the question, but I love the combination of everything else!

Thank you for clearing up the rig picture!

Well, obviously, you will have to try the boxes yourself to hear what you like. I personally found it difficult to find a distortion I liked for the Stick.
My old Pro Co Rat comes quite close, though. (And the pedal I really love is way out of your budget, it's an Okko Diablo.)

I wish you good luck searching!
Johannes

Of course it's a matter of taste, but...

I wouldn't recommend the effects on the DG Stomp... I use two and especially the chorus and flanger are pretty tacky i.m.o. The distortions you can get are OK, but you need to switch the pre-amp on to get them and as soon as you do that, or go anywhere near getting enough top end out of them, they are NOISY... mine hiss like king cobras, to be blunt. All I use on mine are the delay (annoyingly not displayed in milliseconds), some reverb (but most from somewhere else...) and the rotary set in the one and only reasonable setting I could find for it - OK for basic front-end EQ but the effects are crummy and not as good as on small guitar pedals and they're every bit as noisy, I've found. The compressor is so-so at best. The Magic Stomp you're already using will almost certainly make very similar but maybe better (cleaner) sounds anyway, it was designed to replace the DG Stomp.

Best of luck, anyway !

Oh, I didn't remember this unit was so... so-so! But I tried it a few years back. I'm just getting older and older :( ;)
