Post The Puck
Some updates on the Puck (original thread below):
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17220

Well, lot has happened since I first posted about this... :o I don't want to get off topic, but it doesn't seem like a great time to launch a product made out of aluminum.

Fortunately, I've been exploring another direction. So meet the "new" Puck:

This Puck is composed of a carbon fiber reinforced biopolymer. It has slots for screws in case of any variation, a narrow base with beveled sides to avoid pickup housing set screws, etc, and a rubber "sneaker tread" to protect the surface of the Stick. (And thanks again to Gene for the pad suggestion).

Right now I have about a half dozen of these, and I hope to have them up for sale on Reverb very soon!

Keep your Snark in place and stay tuned... 8-)

So does this just mount to a generic stand? Looks handy

Post Re: The Puck
It's only disigned for the NS Design electric upright bass stands:
https://thinkns.com/product/direct-purc ... pod-stand/
https://thinkns.com/product/cr-tripod-s ... ight-bass/
https://thinkns.com/product/electric-up ... pin-stand/ (monopod!)
https://thinkns.com/product/boomerang-strap-system/

It has a 5/16"-18 embedded nut. However, I could possibly include a different size nut in some Pucks if there is interest. For example, Ibanez uses a similar design for their electric upright that is metric (maybe M8-1.5? I contacted the US distributer for Ibanez to ask, but they just told me they wern't given that information by the parent company...)

Metric would be much appreciated here Rick.

Either M8 or M6 would seem like the most likely choices?

If you offered the Puck in either of those (or frankly any sensible standard metric size) I'd very likely swap the home brew wooden bases on my swapable multi-attachment system for Pucks. The Pucks just have the single point of attachment (thumb screw in my case), without the 'keyhole hangers' of my wooden bases, but I think that would be fine (i.e. whilst a nice idea, I think that in practice the 'keyhole hangers' were an unnecessary 'belt & braces' addition).

If only US style 5/16" -18 was avaiable it would become a much harder choice.

However it's your design, so your choice.

Post Re: The Puck
I want the Puck to mostly be compatible with the NS Design support systems. They work great, and Ned Steinberger is a ingenious designer that previously collaborated with Emmett Chapman on the NS/Stick.

But I don't know why the US can't change to metric. Especially strange for the NS instruments, which are mostly made in the Czech Republic.

However, I am willing in the future to have an option for the embedded nut. But the Pucks are designed so that the 5/16" nut staps in snuggly (even then, I've been gluing them in place to make sure they don't rattle). An M8 nut would be a little smaller, and I'll have to figure out how to hold it in place better. I would prefer to target another specific stand that may have a metric nut, so if anyone knows of one (or knows the correct demensions for the Ibanez or similar stands), please let me know.

An eminently reasonable aim. :)

Might it be possible to provide an option of buying a 'nutless' Puck? Then it would be up to the buyer to come up with their own way of afixing their choice of nut?

Post Re: The Puck
I'm afraid it will be a few more days before I sell the Puck. Here's the link to my Reverb "shop", which might expain why I want to make sure it has approval:

https://reverb.com/shop/ricks-gear-bazaar-774

The Puck is unfortunately going to be more than I originally wanted it to be, even after changing from aluminum. I'm realizing how much goes into preparing a product. The Puck will be $75. On the bright side, it will come with a free belt hook adapter. However, there's a catch: These are adapters that were either made for a previous model Puck, and may extend beyond the parimiter, or have other cosmetic flaws. But I guarantee they are fully functional.

I do want to thank those who previewed the Puck and gave me feedback, particullarly Francesco Puddu, who was able to test the Puck on several Stick models and NS support devices. Also Michael Johnstone (although he got an early model and had to considerably modify it to work), Barry Wood, Colin Jenkinson, Jason Thornton, and especially Gene Perry, who was the 2nd person to ever actually see a Puck, and gave me critical feedback.

I hope the Puck will be somewhat usefull to others. Mahalo!

David, I promise that I will eventually get a Puck to you for which you can choose the nut of your preference. However, all the Pucks I have ready for sale right now have the nuts secure within and covered with a TPU rubber pad. And I'm afraid I'm not willing to "neuter" them. ;)

An easy 'end user' solution would be to drill out the current nut thread,
then use a metric tap to re-thread the hole to whatever is desired.
I have both Metric and Imperial 'tap and dies' just for that purpose.
Sometimes, I cannot find what I'm looking for, so I make it.

Nor would I expect you to. :D

I await patiently. I have a solution that works. Yours is just 'nicer'. ;)
