Re: New NS/Stick Channel Video - Gary Jibilian (Part 1) & pa
Never thought of twisting the damper to dampen half the strings. I'll have to try that later tonight. I've switched to straight fourths after years of using a nestled guitar tuning. Helps to try and sight read written music to relearn the note placement. Outside of Stick, the last few guitar seminars at Interlochen really drilled us on alternate tunings which has helped me a lot. The main trick to doing that is to visualize notes as being I,iI, iii, IV, V, etc. How you visualize note placement on an NS really matters as I've found the fretboard a little more involved at times compared to my Grand Stick. With the Grand, you really have just six strings on either side, with the NS, you have an eight string bass or guitar. At times it almost seems like the NS has more notes than my Grand so what Gary said about the upper half high end is spot on, as this is where the NS becomes quite different from other stringed instruments. Thanks Dean

Ok. How about another blast from the past then There was an exceptional music venue right in downtown Detroit called the Music Menu. Great location. All around great place to play. Coup Detroit (my band) used to play there pretty frequently as did Thornetta Davis. After Gary started gigging on his own he landed a weekly Sunday gig there with his first drummer Todd Glass. It was a great gig for them to start showcasing the new material and polishing up the live performances. I started doing a solo gig right around the same time and would occasionally go down and do an opening set. Then during Gary's set, I'd join he and Todd for our own renditions of Gordian Knot's "Grace" and "Redemption's Way". It's really a drag that nobody ever got a recording or video of any of those performances. Killer fun though!

Thoroughly enjoyed both episodes, guys! I am about 98% convinced that I want an SN/Stick now! I couldn't find much on the YouTube for just NS/Stick.
I did also watch Dean's 4-chord version of Purple Rain for NS/Stick. Bflat sus 2, Gminor7, F, EFlat. I took those four chords and rocked out to them on my Railboard. Then I took that to the piano and laid down 2 tracks of piano and then strings. Good times; love that song.
I loved what you did with the NS/Stick!
Must have one. Cheers--good work, Dean!

earthgene wrote: Just watched both videos - excellent. Fun to hear some deep tuning and finger position talk about the NS. I enjoyed hearing about Gary's gungho attitude about coming to LA.

Gary: You gotta try something new, like running down the street naked or something.. Dean: I do NOT want to see that (nodding head) Gary: That will change things though (Dean's expression is priceless)
WINNING! Also the bit about destroying an NS was great, solid gold. Dean Kobayashi, we are loving the NS Channel! Loved hearing all of Gary's backstory, good job. Haa!! Thanks Gene... I'm holding out for the highest bidder for the naked run, and NS smash, or combo. Hmmmm.... I don't think anyone wants to see either.
