Re: Hello from a new Railboarder!
welcome and great video. I look forward to seeing what you come up with in the future. Regarding Preamps Like Rodrigo Ive never had a problem. I use a focusrite interface and plug in directly with it on and with it off . Never had an issue so perhaps the blowing up was just related to the particular preamp you have. Sorry it blew up.

Rob I use a Focusrite interface like Rob does, and I plug and unplug my Railboard with the phantom power on all the time and it crackles and pops and smacks and never does anything else. Every time, I say "that's probably not good for something" but it's not loud enough to damage monitors and apparently the Focusrite can take it! Not to take away from the destruction of your preamp, which sucks, but your problem does not appear to be a common one among Railboardists that I've heard so far. But it's important to hear about and I'm sure you'll be careful of that problem. Thanks for sharing!

Great looking railboard and great playing for just starting out! I see also you play Eigenharp! Honestly I want a Tau almost as much as I wanted a Stick when I first got mine. I bet playing Eigenharp will give you a huge leg up in stepping into the world of the Stick. Excited to hear more!

Congratulations, felicitaciones! I am hoping to get my railboard by my birthday next year. Also hoping that the 12-string model is announced by then

Re: Hello from a new Railboarder!
Nice playing! I'm waiting on my Railboard right now myself - looking forward to getting started with the Stick again! About the phantom power problem - sorry to hear it, that really sucks to blow out preamps like that. While it could be something about the MH design, phantom in general is potentially hazardous, particularly when applied to TRS jacks. There's an interesting AES paper on this, for the particularly geeky: http://www.thatcorp.com/datashts/AES790 ... eturns.pdfThe relevant point, however, is this: Quote: 2.5. Faults in Real World Phantom faults can occur when: (skipping a through d) e) A TRS male plug with phantom energized on the tip and ring is plugged into a patch bay (or any 1/4" jack), making temporary contact with the grounded jack sleeve on its way in.
Due to their physical design, the exposed contacts of male TRS plugs are more likely to accidentally touch metal objects than the partially shrouded XLR contacts. Thus, TRS plugs are especially prone to causing phantom faults. So the moral of the story is: switch your 48v phantom power OFF when plugging in/unplugging the Stick. You're less likely to have problems if you unplug the XLR connectors first, because of their discrete design - but switching off the phantom is the safest bet.

Geert, you are obviously a talented musician to have made this amount of progress in so short a time. Your intuitive understanding is mind boggling. I've been at it for 2 years now, and I am really impressed with your abilities already! Looking forward to hearing much more from you , keep posting, it's inspiring!

Re: Hello from a new Railboarder!
Hi, I received my Railboard yesterday (took a while to go through customs, from Dec22 - Jan08...)
I'm playing Piano and Guitar since 30+ yrs and wondered if I, aged 50, can still figure out how to play that stunning instrument I heard Daniel Kane playing on fishermans wharf back in 1990....
I opted for the "Matched reciprocal" tuning - what did you choose? I still have to make up my mind if MatchedReciprocal is the tuning to stay with, I don't want to jeopardize the learning process later on by switching to a "better" tuning.
Anyone reading this, any tipps which tuning would be the best for a newbie being used to standard guitar (E-A-D-G-H-E) and piano? Any tuning which is more "like" Piano/guitar which could foster the process?
BR Dirk
