REHARMONIZATION, NOT JUST FOR BREAKFAST ANYMORE! DBRO
I recently started down the rabbit hole that is Youtube ( Blue or Red pill? ) and there are some excellent videos by Adam Neely and Jeff Schneider. If you write, and you do- really play a couple of notes that you never heard anyone else play - Sir Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Crimson, Wilson, .. Mr. Wilson... , then you are writer! Congrats.
Now for some meat on those bones. here are two vids to get started but you may want to check out their other videos that interest you. All valid techniques and might help when you are playing a cover and say "wow, where'd they get that chord from?"
Reharmonization ( or throw out those old chords) - Jeff Schneider

Great videos. Got to say if you want to learn to reharmonize get yourself an app called Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro and check out the 19 part series (and growing)on reharmonizing Danny Boy using the map app and the concepts involved. I've used these concepts lots but the app makes thing so much easier when trying to decide what you want to do. Tritone subs anyone? Anyway. A great app a lots of videos to go with it. Well worth the money for anyone wanting to do a fresh arrangement

"There's only so far you can push the harmony in a piece of music before it becomes alienating..." (12 minutes into "Extreme...") HAHAHAHA (not in MY book)
