Post Jazz and the Chapman Stick WEBCAST this Sunday
Hi Everyone,

I'll be playing some discs by the usual suspects, unusual suspects, some live tunes, and a surprise archive recording of the man himself, Emmett Chapman, from 1972, never before broadcast...

The effort is a fundraiser for a truly unique and independent radio station at the University of Virginia, which is having their annual Jazz Marathon from the 24th-30 of September.

My show will be on from 7-9 PM (GMT-4) Sunday, September 30.

Here's a link to their live stream, should you want to tune in
http://wtju.net/stream

and if you feel so inclined, make a pledge to support the station:
http://wtju.net/record/marathons/jazz2012/index

Thanks to Emmett for his permission to turn you on to his early music...it's a really good recording of some smokin' live performance, and that is all I will say....you'll have to tune in to find out more.

Here's a video from the last time I was on the air during the marathon in 2010:

Sounds very promising :)
Unfortunately I will miss the webcast, as it will be 3-5 am Monday here... Hope there will be a recording available later.

Just a reminder to tune in tonight for this live in the studio broadcast. The first hour will be solo, also with some recordings by well-known Stickists in the jazz milieu.

2nd hour I'll be joined by Gina Sobel on the flute and Darrell Rose on African percussion instruments.

Great job Greg!!!! Loved the Emmett tunes, any chance of making them available?

The beginning of "Goya's dream" was really hot (distorted) but all of the playing was superb.

Thanks
Brett

Thanks, Brett,

I think I still have to do some mastering work on them, but I hope Emmett would release them. I love the music. There's a lot of power and energy in it, and I can totally hear why people ere so into the instrument even early on.

For those who are instrested, the show is archived for streaming for 2 weeks, so tune in to hear some never before broadcast recordings of Emmett throwing it down with Les DeMerle on the drums in 1973.

And if you feel like it, you can still make a pledge after the fact to the station.

In addition to my own live tunes with Gina Sobel and Darrell Rose, we were able to get in music by:

Pan Metropolitan Trio (Japhlet on Stick)
Brett Bottomley
String Planet (featuring Larry Tuttle)
Guillermo Cides
Kevin Keith
and Jim Lampi/Michael Manring

apologies to all the jazz Stickists who were not included this time around. I tried to mix it up a bit from past broadcasts.

Thanks to Emmett for agreeing to have his music debuted in this way, for the benefit of the station.

until next time...

Greg,
really nice show!

On the Crossing, who was this Swedish Chapman Stick player, Yurs Truleee?
Was he in the international Greg Howard Band on Lift? :D

For those of you that let life and Sunday night school projects due Monday pass you by,
you can catch the program at

http://wtju.net/vault

streamed right into my iTunes with no problem.

again, great program to get great music out there,
Dave Brosky

Thanks Dave,

There wasn't an engineer there when we started so some of the levels got out of control, but I had a great time and really enjoyed spinning a variety of Stick-centric jazz as well.

Enjoyed the "Still Water" quintet video, another great rendition. Greg knows how to listen and how to lead, shape-shifting himself into acoustic space.

Someone out there watching this video might finally make the connection as to how The Stick fits into a jazz ensemble.

Couldn't find my early duo with Les DeMerle on WTJU's site using Greg's or Dave's links.
