New Title - Stories from Interlochen
I was passing some Interlochen info on to somebody this morning and I ran across this video and this is something I'd actually forgotten about.
Every concert at Interlochen during the summer arts camp ends with a performance of the "Interlochen Theme". The them is about a minute and a half excerpt from Howard Hanson's "Romantic Symphony" which was partially composed at Interlochen in 1930. The audiences are instructed not to applause afterward which explains why people in the video begin to guietly file out after it's over.

Generally the adult programs don't do this. Hmmmm ... maybe we should work a version up.

I like how the sun hits the windows toward the end.
Looking forward to next summer.

That particular venue is the Kresge Auditorium. It's one of many but it is the largest and also doubles as northwest Michigan's summer concert venue for touring acts. Steely Dan was just there about a week and a half ago. The venue sits right on Green Lake which is what is outside the windows. The pics below are of the same place, one looking at the stage from inside and the other looking at the back from the water. The third shows the inscription over the stage that reads "Dedicated To The Promotion Of World Friendship Through The Universal Language Of The Arts"

Re: The Interlochen Theme - a neat little tidbit
Poor audio quality on this one but a little background on its relevance.
That same large venue also has a full size pipe organ. In 2011 the weather was particularly agreeable during our Stick workshops and we took to taking our lunches at the outdoor picnic tables on Green Lake just outside the amphitheater. Every day during the workshop right at our lunch break, the same high school kid was sitting down at the organ and practicing Bach. It was the kind of sound that vibrated you right down to the diaphragm when he hit full volume and full range. I remember Bob Culbertson not wanting to go back to our afternoon sessions until the kid wrapped up his practice session.

Re: New Title - Stories from Interlochen
Hi all. I've changed the title of this thread since "stories" is more or less what this is becoming.
So here's the deal. Between now and next July, let's add stories here. I'll add stories from the Stick workshops and my own experiences. I would suggest to you folks that have been here to add stories of your own as well.
Go!
