No, I haven't finished listening to the podcast. I listen to it while driving to work and when I take walks around my office.

However,

I had an idea while listening to the discussion about linear vs dot inlays. It makes sense that the dots are more aesthetically pleasing since that's what guitars have used forever, while the linear inlays are more useful for the player. And then I had a thought.

The frets are in the same (relative) position as the linear inlays. You can see the fret from the side of the instrument, just like a linear inlay. Is is possible to have different color frets, so that every X frets (the same distance as the linear inlays) the fret is a different color?

I can think of a couple of potential problems, and I don't have the knowledge to know if these problems are real or just potential. First, the frets might be just too small to use as visual indicators. That would pretty much be the kiss of death on my idea. Second, the variability of the color of the frets is just not enough to act as a visual indicator without switching metals to something that would act differently while being played. If every X notes sounds different because the fret is different enough, that's again a kiss of death.

But if it hasn't already been looked at by Stick Enterprises, perhaps it should be.

This reminds me of somthing I came across a couple of weeks ago when searching for anything on 'inlay stickers' before I went ahead & added some 'C markers' to my ironwood #1642.

fx: Pause while try to find it again. Ah. Got it.

In this post Olivier describes (& shows with pictures) how he put narrow 'pinstripe' tape on one side of the 'self-coloured' rails of a Railboard to make them stand out more clearly. In that case it was not only at the 'inlay' positions - he taped ALL the frets because it was for a different purpose, but I guess the principle is the same?
