Looking to Buy an NS Stick
Hello everyone,
I’m looking to purchase an NS Stick, either new or used, in great condition. Here’s what I’m seeking:
Right-handed model with heavy gauge strings. Open to different finishes, as long as the instrument is in good shape without major damage. Timeline: Ideally within the next few months, but I’ll keep this post up until I find the right instrument. Location: I’m in the American Southwest, so shipping may be a factor. Musical style: Primarily for Prog Rock/Prog Metal, using it as a bass extension but also open to exploring melodic options.
If you have an NS Stick for sale or know of any leads, feel free to reach out. Also open to any tips or learning resources for getting started. I'm open to most aesthetics and half-fretless.

So maybe worth asking there if you haven't already? It's definitely worth asking SE. I ordered mine in May of 2023 and received it 5 months to the day in October of 2023. I wasn't picky about body type or neck type, so I chose from what they had in stock. Also, I didn't choose a glossy finish, just the natural maple in flat finish with wenge neck. Apparently, adding the glossy finish adds lots of time. Definitely worth a phone call and Jeff is super helpful.

Re: Looking to Buy an NS Stick
I've spoken to Jeff a few times so I totally might just end up doing that. I believe it is around 16 months without the extras. At that point, I might end up getting the aesthetic I like and keep trying to find a used instrument.
It seems like the 10s and 12s hold on to their value over the NS/Stick and the 8 String Stick Bass. So maybe it's possible to go used while waiting for the new one. I appreciate the info!

NS Stick's cool, I played one for 2 years b4 switching to 10-string Stick. I'd go for the one they have listed on Musicgoround.com since the price is right. It looks like they put some cheap knobs on there but I'm sure SE would sell you replacements.

Re: Looking to Buy an NS Stick
Be sure to check sold listings on Reverb.com - this will provide some sort of realistic range for what people are actually paying for. I am seeing them range from ~$2200 - $3500 all of which include a case, a strap and in some cases an extra set of strings. There have not been as many changes to the base configuration of the NS as there has been for the Chapman Stick in the past decade, so the value of an instrument in good working condition should justify purchasing one in a used state versus having the choice of wood for the body and neck. There are no linear inlays for the NS nor are the options for midi (rip). There are simply fewer options to be had. The half fretless option will add some time to the order - and the ramp up on an instrument that is half fretted - I mean getting it sound good - is a tall order. Something to watch for with a used NS Stick is the integrity of the housing of the truss. Make sure there aren't any dings, cracks or fractures in the wood at either end of the truss housing. If these are not present in the auction / ad, request them. I have an Ash / Bamboo neck 2019 that I would consider selling, but I'd need to get to know you first.

I’ve been stalking Reverb like it’s a full-time job, so it’s great to get some insider info on what to look for, especially with the truss housing. I’m serious about diving into the Stick world. I totally understand wanting to get to know someone first, instruments need good homes! I’m easy to get to know, and always down to chat more about this journey. Let me know what works for you! There is a lot to learn and I think that’s what makes it more enjoyable.

Re: Looking to Buy an NS Stick
I'm actually looking to sell my NS, if you're still looking. Serial #6733, dark copper laquer with a wenge neck with a Stick Enterprises gig bag and a Roland GK pickup installed. I bought it used from SE back in 2017, but I've never gigged with it. It's a great instrument, I just didn't gel with it like I'd hoped so it's been just sitting around in recent years. I'd really like to pass it on to someone who will play it. It has one small cosmetic ding in the finish, right next to the leg support. I was recently emailing with a local luthier shop to see about having that fixed before selling, but if you can live with it I'll let it go for $1800 plus shipping & insurance. I've got a Reverb shop, if you like I can post it there: https://reverb.com/shop/willowhaus-audio I'm just another musician, not a dealer but I've sold a few things there (and bought more than a few!). I know it's a lot of money, and I want both of us to be protected. LMK if you're interested.
