Re: To go Lefty or not to go Lefty
Daniel,
I am STILL impressed with your virtuosity with that solo from Dust in the Wind, and truth be told with every thing you do! Huge Kansas fan who met the whole band (Robby Steinhardt was having open heart surgery that night, and Bobby Ragsdale more than filled in) you do it justice in the first degree!
As Molly Shannon used to say on SNL "love it, love it, love it!"

I might be wrong about it, but I believe SE does not charge any extra for lefty instruments. I'll check with Emmett tomorrow.

Re: To go Lefty or not to go Lefty
Thanks, Dave! Shout out! Our Skype time has been a boon. I recommend it to any strugglers or stragglers.
I think Eric the Gray has it exactly right (heh). The only thing I naturally do right-handed is throw a frisbee. Everything else has been "lefty in a righty world". From using a can opener, tying shoes in reverse, learning tennis reverse and so forth, it is natural to consider the uncomfortable approach (righty), the modified approach (lefty) and the sunny-side approach (I can write/type and use a mouse at the same time).
When I was learning piano, my teacher read me an article written about lefty piano players. It said we would never be able to play as beautifully as a righty player because our strong left hands would drown out the melody, and our weak right hands would never play a fast, clean melody with good dynamics. In my experience, and my audiences', the author was dead wrong. Practice leads to control, and control allows for a soft left hand and a quick, dynamic right hand. The Stick is much the same. There is no need for a left piano or a lefty Stick. There is a great need for practice, learning and understanding.

sagehalo wrote: I play lefty bass guitar (5-string fretless, homemade, thank you very much) and piano. I play conventional stick, which matches both of these instruments. From piano it is logical to give the LH access to the lowest tones. It also matches with lefty bass guitar to give the RH (neck hand) the melody side for speedy solos. Dave Brosky was impressed how easily I could manage the violin solo from Dust in the Wind with my RH, but it comes completely from my piano and bass guitar experience.
Although Greg doesn't remember meeting me the first time, this exact question was one that I asked him. Because of my experience, he guided me toward conventional Stick. He was right. With his help, I picked a PASV-4 Grand with no MIDI, as I like electric sounds and have next to no FX, MIDI or otherwise. Really glad it worked out for you Daniel. I've always though that being a lefty was a little bit of an advantage in dealing with the challenge of the longer scale and "wider" tuning of the Stick. Plus it's nice not to have to concentrate as much on one's weak hand for the "bread-and-butter" of time-keeping. Just a theory. Most instruments are as "right-handed" as they are for the reason of giving the time-keeping job to the strong hand. Intricacy in the "stopping hand" is a relatively recent development compared to rhythm.

Re: To go Lefty or not to go Lefty
Just watching the poll. I't's interesting to me how many who played guitar or bass as a lefty are playing the Stick the other way.

Re: To go Lefty or not to go Lefty
This would be even more interesting if any left-handed stick player has actually played the left-handed piano...

Re: To go Lefty or not to go Lefty
I am left-handed. My guitar is left handed too. My stick is the standard configuration. And my right hand is probably somewhat more dominant on the piano keyboard. And I cannot use lefty scissors. Go figure.

Re: To go Lefty or not to go Lefty
I was going to make a new poll about left-handed Stick, but I see it's been done. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that anyone who plays a left-handed Stick model answered the poll, even though I know that the instruments exist. https://leftyfretz.com/chapman-stick-left-handed-guitars/So I gather most left-handed Stick players use the standard setup on their instruments. Any others out there who never answered this poll? It is 10 years old, so maybe there are some who missed it? Well, I'd like to revive this as I feel it's an important question for anyone making something for use by other Stick players. This includes not only hardware and equipment, but software or templates for tabs, fret diagrams, etc.

Re: To go Lefty or not to go Lefty
I am a hardcore lefty, but grew up playing the piano from a young age. As a result, my RH is more dextrous (for keyboards at least) than my left. I started playing guitar righty in college, because that was what was available. Just don't ask me to cut paper with a pair of scissors in my right hand. Or eat with a fork in my right hand. Or many other common tasks we humans do.
I play Stick in the standard configuration. Since it is an instrument that uses both hands independently, I don't have any problem with it.
I was just practicing a melody in my RH, then my LH today. The RH was effortless, and the LH was really difficult. It's either the 5ths spacing, my weak LH pinky, or just practicing melody a whole lot more in my RH. It showed me another area that I need to put more practice into.
